How-To for Teachers

In this manual, expectations on teachers in the WASP Graduate School are described together with the support that is provided by the WASP administration and the Graduate School management group.

General information

The WASP courses are only open for PhD Students in the WASP graduate school with occasional exceptions made for PhD students in our sister (KAW funded) programs, such as WASP-HS. Course information, course plans, rules and procedures are described on the WASP Intranet, under Graduate School and in the How-To for PhD students.

In below sections, you will find information about expectations on teachers and support for teachers when it comes to teaching and course planning. In the appendix you will find out more about the process flow of the implementation of a course, defined roles and tasks, etc.

  • The teachers are responsible for tasks as described in the process flow (see Appendix).
  • The teachers should participate in WASP Teaching Faculty meetings.
  • The student groups are highly heterogeneous. It is therefore important to take this into account when designing the course and developing the course material including lectures. Advice for suitable self-studies before the course is appreciated.
  • The teachers are expected to provide a reasonable amount of flexibility to accommodate for sickness, parental duties, conference deadlines, and other time sensitive and important duties.
  • Sometimes we are approached by external students or industry representatives who are interested in a WASP course. Unless decided by GSM, only WASP PhD students can take the WASP courses. If external parts want to attend a lecture as a listener, this is for the teacher to decide.

The examiners are responsible for tasks as described in the process flow (see Appendix).

Please note that examiners should communicate results (Pass/Fail) to the students. Examiners should also send the final list of praticipant results for the entire course in Excel format to the WASP Program office (PO), anna.bjornemo@liu.se. If a student would complete only some modules of a course, please clarify this in the list to PO.

The course participants should:

  • keep themselves informed about the course via the specified information channels.
  • attend and actively participate in all mandatory parts of the course.
  • contact the teacher to discuss any problem with the time schedule in good time.
  • prepare themselves for a course, especially when they lack expected prior knowledge.

All teachers should be assigned a contact in GSM (normally the examiner) with whom they can discuss any course-related issues. Policy related decisions are taken by the examiner in consultation with the teachers.

PO helps as administrative support as described in the process flow (see Appendix).
