The area clusters join together PhD students and WASP faculty working within an area that is substantially larger than a core technology cluster but not specific to a particular application domain. Some examples are security, software engineering, and cloud technology.
Initially the following area clusters have been created:

- Ethical, Legal and Societal Aspects (also open for participation from WASP-HS)
- Localization and Navigation
- Machine Learning
- Mathematical Foundations of AI
- Perception and Learning
- Robotics
- Cybersecurity
- Software Engineering & Technology
