Application Cluster Smart Environments

Smart Environments signifies a physical world that is richly and invisibly interwoven with sensors, actuators, displays, and computational elements, embedded seamlessly in the everyday objects of our lives, and connected through a continuous network. However, such capabilities are mainly enablers but what makes an environment “smart” depends on how the available information is acted upon and what purposes it serves.

In a city, smartness can signify improving the smoothness of traffic, or providing simplified mobility. A car, a building or a factory can also be smart, for instance. Then the smartness typically signifies an improvement of comfort, safety, productivity or energy efficiency.

All these “smart” functions need to be implemented using some kind of Artificial Intelligence (AI) system, which is increasingly often built using Machine Learning (ML). The Smart Environments cluster therefore must cover numerous disciplines, from AI and ML to sensors, actuators and human-computer interfaces, and to Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems and Systems of Systems.
