The annual Community Building Summer School is the perfect opportunity for PhD students to learn more about WASP, receive information about all the great opportunities they are offered during their PhD journey and to meet the WASP community.
This year’s Community Building Summer School took place 26-30 of August in Norrköping, whereof one day in Linköping. During the visit to Linköping the PhD students got the opportunity to meet the industry. They visited Qualcomm, National Supercomputer Centre (NSC), Ericsson, Sectra and SAAB. It gave the students a chance to talk to representatives from the companies and get a tour in their premises.
Meet two WASP PhD students: Ludvig and Yangyang
Ludvig Dillén
Ludvig Dillén is a first-year WASP PhD student in Computer Vision at Lund University. His research focuses on large-scale mapping from images, with deep learning as a core technique. He applied for a WASP PhD position since the program offers courses and has several researchers specializing in related areas.
What’s your takeaway from the community building?
The content has been varied with activities ranging from courses like Large Scale Computing, Network Theory to company visits to the National Supercomputer Centre, Ericsson, and more. Beyond this, we’ve really had the chance to get to know WASP better, both in terms of all its opportunities but especially in terms of the people in it. My main takeaway is that research in teams seems to greatly benefit both the research content and the overall experience.
How is it to be a part of WASP so far?
Meeting like-minded people within WASP has probably been the biggest perk of joining this network. Having many conversations about exciting research topics and the challenges of doing a PhD have really fueled me with motivation and positivity. So, it’s great! Now, I am looking forward to a month of research in Lund before heading to the WASP study trip to Vancouver.
Yangyang Wen
Yangyang Wen is a first-year WASP PhD student at Umeå University. Her connection to WASP began when she was searching for a PhD position in Sweden. She had the opportunity to join WASP through her position at Umeå University.
What’s your takeaways from the community building?
It was a fantastic opportunity to meet a diverse range of people from different backgrounds. I made many new friends and connections and had the chance to collaborate with new individuals. Visiting great companies and learning about their work was also a highlight. Overall, I would say the biggest takeaway was the enjoyable experience of being part of a great community with excellent people, making for a fun and fulfilling event.
How is it to be a part of WASP so far?
Being part of WASP is great because it offers opportunities to meet people from diverse backgrounds and participate in many exciting activities. It provides unique chances to collaborate with researchers and team worldwide, supported by organized and expert assistance. I feel very happy and honoured to be part of this group. WASP encourages us to communicate and support each other, helping us achieve our own definitions of success.
